Mission at Advent

In our hectic, schedule-driven lives, it can be easy to think that church is where we go on Sundays. But church isn’t a building; it’s the people. If you ask us where our church is located, we will tell you that through our work, play, and worship, we're spread all over the Texas Medical Center, the greater West University neighborhoods, and beyond!

Mission

At Advent Houston, we believe that mission, spiritual formation, and discipleship are all interconnected. When Jesus called his first disciples, he issued an invitation that was also a command, beautiful in its simplicity and yet complex enough that it takes a lifetime to answer: “Follow me.” Discipleship simply means following Jesus. Put another way, discipleship means submitting our lives to Jesus the LORD and joining God in what he is already doing in the world—his mission.

Discipleship doesn’t merely happen by reading a book or praying silently in your room. As modeled for us all throughout the Bible, discipleship must take place in the context of meaningful relationships with other people who are pursuing a common goal. For Advent Houston, the common goal is “to embrace, embody, and extend the grace of Jesus Christ in the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and the greater West University neighborhoods.”

By being flexible, creative, and bold with our ministry while seeking God's wisdom and by equipping and encouraging our leaders, members, and attenders to take faith-filled ministry risks that might fail, we seek to join God’s work in the world, trusting that Christ's ends will be accomplished.

serve the city

God has been at work in Houston long before Advent Houston arrived. Jesus said that His Kingdom was coming, and it exists both now in part, and not yet in completion. In His goodness, God gives us glimpses of his healing, restoring, beautifying work in our city, and in his generosity, He invites us to join His work.

Although there are many ways to seek the good of our city for God’s glory, Advent Houston partners with these specific organizations serving Houston. We encourage you to join us in supporting and serving them!

serve the world

Although our primary ministry focus is on the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and the surrounding neighborhoods, we also want to remember that God is at work all over the world. Advent Houston partners with these international organizations.

Prayer and Care

When we pray, “Thy will be done,” as Jesus taught us to pray in what is known as the Lord’s prayer, we acknowledge that we trust God to keep his promises. But sometimes praying alone is difficult, and our own doubts keep us from turning to God. In addition to encouraging regular prayer in our Parish Groups, Advent Houston staff members are available to pray with you in person, over the phone, or via Zoom.

We want to support you with prayers, meals, and other tangible means of grace.
