At Advent Houston, we believe that mission, spiritual formation, and discipleship are all interconnected. When Jesus called his first disciples, he issued an invitation that was also a command, beautiful in its simplicity and yet complex enough that it takes a lifetime to answer: “Follow me.” Discipleship simply means following Jesus. Put another way, discipleship means submitting our lives to Jesus the LORD and joining God in what he is already doing in the world—his mission.
Discipleship doesn’t merely happen by reading a book or praying silently in your room. As modeled for us all throughout the Bible, discipleship must take place in the context of meaningful relationships with other people who are pursuing a common goal. For Advent Houston, the common goal is “to embrace, embody, and extend the grace of Jesus Christ in the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and the greater West University neighborhoods.”
By being flexible, creative, and bold with our ministry while seeking God's wisdom and by equipping and encouraging our leaders, members, and attenders to take faith-filled ministry risks that might fail, we seek to join God’s work in the world, trusting that Christ's ends will be accomplished.
