What to Expect on Sundays
Here's what a typical Sunday morning looks like in 5 steps.
Arrive
Our service begins at 10:00 AM and typically lasts about an hour and twenty minutes (ending around 11:20 AM). We recommend arriving ten minutes early so you can grab some coffee, get situated, and find a seat.
You will find a wide variety of attire at Advent—from shorts and sandals, to business casual. We invite you to be comfortable and to come as you are.
Our meeting location is at The Weekley Family YMCA, 7101 Stella Link Blvd. We have a large parking lot and signs to direct you where to go.
Children on Sundays at Advent
We’re thrilled to partner with you in nurturing your child’s faith. The Explorers classroom (6 mo – Pre-K) is designed for our youngest friends, offering a safe and engaging environment. Each week, Explorers enjoy crafts, singing, and an age-appropriate Bible lesson. Please check in all children at the iPad station located in the front hallway. You will receive a pick-up code printed next to the iPad that matches the sticker placed on your child’s name tag. Please present this code to the teacher when picking up your child. The matching pick-up code ensures that only authorized adults can retrieve your child from the classroom.
The Service
Our Sunday morning worship services are the primary gatherings of Advent Houston. Regular worship is vital to the life of a follower of Christ, and it’s also a great introduction for someone exploring the claims of Christianity. Everyone—no matter their background or beliefs—is welcome.
At Advent, our worship is shaped by modern interpretations of historic, liturgical practices of the Christian church—patterns of worship that have formed believers for generations. This means our service is structured to lead us to encounter God through practices like singing hymns and contemporary songs, praying together, confessing our sins, hearing the Bible read and preached, and celebrating communion weekly.
Crucially, we make an effort to regularly explain the “what” and “why” of our service as we go along. This way, whether you’ve been in church your whole life or are attending for the very first time, you’ll feel comfortable and know how to fully participate in the service.
Sermon
Every Sunday, we have a 30–35 minute time of preaching, where we open the Bible together to better understand God, His world, and His plan in it. We typically study entire books of the Bible or we will look at what the Bible has to say about particular topics. This time is a journey through the Scriptures to see Jesus more clearly and understand God’s unfolding plan.
We love having children in worship! Just before the sermon begins, children in kindergarten–5th grade will be dismissed to their classroom by the service leader where they will enjoy their own age-appropriate teaching time.
Communion
Communion is a vital and encouraging part of our service where we tangibly celebrate the grace of God weekly. This sacrament is Christ’s gift to His church, where we remember and proclaim His death and resurrection until He comes again. In keeping with our desire to make all parts of the service accessible, we provide clear instructions on how we celebrate communion and who should participate, so you will feel comfortable no matter your familiarity with the practice.
Connect & Next Steps
Getting to know people, building relationships, and finding your place in a new community can be daunting. We want to make it easy for you!
Please join us in the hallway before or after the service for coffee and refreshments. Our pastor, staff members, and congregants will be around near the refreshments to welcome you personally and answer any questions you may have about Advent, our beliefs, or how to get connected.
We do use a shared space, so many of our volunteers and staff will begin tearing down the gym shortly after the service ends. Even while things are being put away, we would genuinely love to visit with you and make sure you feel welcomed before you leave!
